Welcome back!
Cat behaviour often seems like an unsolvable mystery. You may have heard things like, “You can’t train a cat” or
“cats are the owners and we are the servants” or “cats rule and dogs drool” and the list goes on.
How you interpret your cats behavior has a lot to do with understanding your cat and whether you’ll be able to
bring consistent change to any behaviours that are causing problems.
Until you understand the why’s of your cats behavior, you will be left with lots of questions and few answers. Cat
characteristics are very different from dogs or other animals and require a totally different approach.
Let’s look at a few common behaviors and see what we can learn.
Purring:
Often referred to as a kitty having its motor running.
One of our cats has a steady purr and the other sounds more like the old hit and miss engines. But whatever engine
their purring sounds like, it’s a sign of a contented, relaxed kitty.
Scratching:
Scratching is a natural instinct and you need to provide something other than your furniture and curtains for your
cat to scratch. This is normal and certainly not a bad thing. It becomes a behavioral issue only when the object
the cat chooses isn’t one of your choices.
Kneading:
This is when your kitty takes its front paws and begins to knead you (our kitties will stand on our lap and begin
to work their paws on our lap for quite a while). This behavior is a sign of a very contented, happy cat and
something we greatly enjoy.
High Points:
A cat will often locate the highest place in the room and then try to figure out a way to get there. This comes
from the need to be able to observe its surroundings and is similar to a hawk sitting up in a tree and having a
great vantage point to watch for its next meal. So look around your home and see where kitty may try to get to and
make sure that there is nothing that could cause you cat to be hurt trying to get to her high point of observation.
Chattering Teeth:
We first noticed this with one of our cats who we took in as a stray. She was used to fending for herself in the
outdoors before she adopted us. One day their was a bird right outside our window just a few inches from the glass
and she went over on the back of the couch and began to make this strange chattering noise. At least it seemed
strange to us. We discovered that this was something that cats do when their excited about something especially a
potential meal.
These are few cat behaviours that are common to most cats. There are many more which we will get into in other
articles to help you and your favorite friends learn to live together in mutual peace.
